Fighting Period Poverty
Berks and Schuylkill County's Menstrual Equity Project

OUR MISSION
HAGO (Help a Girl Out) is a grassroots effort dedicated to providing feminine products and diapers to women and girls served by local nonprofits throughout Berks and Schuylkill Counties. The initiative was born when Suzanne Cody discovered the Children's Home of Reading was running low on period products, opening her eyes to period poverty—an often-unspoken public health crisis affecting many in the community. The campaign addresses this need by collecting essential hygiene products, including diapers, pads, tampons, period underwear, wipes, and incontinence products. Beyond just collecting supplies, HAGO aims to reduce the stigma surrounding menstruation and create awareness about an issue many suffer with silently. Through community engagement and education, the campaign works to ensure that no woman or girl has to miss work or school simply because they cannot afford or access period products.

History & Growth
Now in its fourth year, HAGO has experienced remarkable growth since its inception. The initiative was founded by Suzanne Cody in collaboration with Liz Hafer, Chairwoman of Berks Women in Motion, along with Stacy Perlaki from Opportunity House and Alison Pakradooni, owner of Be Mine Boutique in West Reading.
What began as a small community response has blossomed into a county-wide movement. In 2023, the campaign collected nearly 30,000 units of feminine products, and in 2024, that number grew significantly to 47,314 units.
For 2025, organizers are aiming to exceed the previous year's impressive collections, expanding their reach and impact throughout the region. This steady growth demonstrates both the persistent need within the community and the increasing public awareness and support for addressing period poverty.
Partner Organizations
The success of HAGO relies on a network of committed partners throughout Berks County. Leading the collection efforts are Muhlenberg Greene Architects, Be Mine Boutique, JPrutzman Enterprises, and Coldwell Banker Realty, joined by over 35 additional locations across the county that serve as collection points.
These businesses and organizations open their doors to accept donations, amplifying the campaign's reach far beyond what would be possible through a single collection site.
On the distribution side, Co-County Wellness Services and Helping Harvest ensure that collected products reach those in need throughout Berks and Schuylkill County. In previous years, recipients have included CHOR Youth and Family Services, Opportunity House, The LGBT Center of Greater Reading, and Safe Berks. This collaborative approach unites businesses, nonprofits, and community members in addressing period poverty through a coordinated, efficient distribution system that maximizes impact.
The Impact of Period Poverty
The effects of period poverty reach into every aspect of affected individuals' lives, creating ripples that extend far beyond the days of menstruation. In education, girls regularly miss school during their periods when they lack proper products, resulting in significant learning gaps and decreased academic performance over time. Similarly, in the workplace, women miss valuable work hours or entire days, risking their financial stability and career advancement.
The health risks associated with improvised period management solutions are substantial, with infections and complications requiring medical attention that many cannot afford. This creates a compounding effect where period poverty leads to missed work, which increases financial hardship, which in turn worsens period poverty—a vicious cycle that's difficult to break without intervention.
Beyond the physical and financial impacts lies the psychological burden: the shame, embarrassment, and stigma associated with period poverty adds another layer of suffering, affecting mental health and self-esteem in ways that can last far longer than the period itself.
Online Donations
For those unable to visit physical drop-off locations or those who prefer the convenience of online shopping, HAGO offers a simple digital donation option through an Amazon Wish List. The curated list, available here, features all the most-needed items in appropriate quantities and varieties.
Donors can purchase products directly through Amazon and have them shipped to Helping Harvest with the designation "C/O HAGO" to ensure proper routing. This online option provides a convenient alternative for those with busy schedules who still wish to contribute to this important cause, ensuring that everyone who wants to help combat period poverty has a way to participate regardless of their personal circumstances.
